Editorial policy

This page sets out the standards the desk works to.

Sourcing

Numbers, dates and rule text come from a named primary source and are checked against it before publication. We do not publish a figure we cannot trace.

Independence

Coverage by the desk is not sold: no organisation pays for a mention in a reference piece, and the betting guides explain how odds and wagers work and describe the law without recommending operators or offers. The one exception is the Wire, whose feed items are supplied by partners and may include paid links; those links are marked nofollow.

Corrections

If a figure or statement is wrong, write to [email protected]. Substantive corrections are made in the text and the page’s update date is changed.

Automated material

The Wire section includes short stories delivered by an automated feed. They are published as received and are labelled by their feed; the reference pieces on the same page are written by the desk.

Photographs

Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons under open licences. The author and licence are printed with every image.
