The greater New York region has more professional teams than any other metropolitan area in the country, and visitors are often surprised to learn that the two football teams do not play in New York at all.

Football: New Jersey

The Giants and the Jets both play at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which opened in 2010 and seats about 82,500. It is on the New Jersey side of the Hudson, about eight miles from Midtown Manhattan.

Baseball: the Bronx and Queens

  • Yankees: Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, opened in 2009 across the street from the original.
  • Mets: Citi Field in Queens, also opened in 2009, next to the site of Shea Stadium.

Basketball: Manhattan and Brooklyn

  • Knicks: Madison Square Garden, which opened in its current form in 1968 above Penn Station.
  • Nets and Liberty: Barclays Center in Brooklyn, opened in 2012.

Hockey: three arenas

  • Rangers: Madison Square Garden.
  • Islanders: UBS Arena in Elmont, on Long Island next to Belmont Park, opened in 2021.
  • Devils: Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, opened in 2007.

Soccer

New York City FC plays its home matches at Yankee Stadium and at Citi Field, and has announced plans for a purpose-built stadium in Queens. The New York Red Bulls play in Harrison, New Jersey, across the Hudson from Lower Manhattan.

The practical lesson

If you buy a ticket, check the address. Only three of the region's arenas are in Manhattan or the Bronx and can be reached by subway; the others are reached by commuter rail, which is covered in our guide to the subway and rail lines for each venue.
